History

Cox & Associates, LLC is proud to be a Bloomington, Illinois Law Firm providing Central Illinois with experienced legal services in the areas of Estate Planning, Family Law,  Bankruptcy, Business Law, Civil Litigation, Estate Administration, Real Estate and Tax Law. No matter what your civil legal issue may be, Cox & Associates, LLC can provide you with the legal experience and professionalism you deserve.

Originally established by Merrick Hayes in 1970, the firm, previously known as Hayes, Hammer, Miles & Cox, now known as Cox & Associates, LLC has long been relied upon by individuals and business clients alike for quality representation.

Our firm presently features four attorneys, each distinguished and recognized for his work and reputation in the legal field, who focus on distinct areas of civil legal practice but function as a team.  We are further staffed by skilled paraprofessionals who provide valuable assistance to the firm's attorneys and clients alike.

In addition to providing experienced legal services in Central Illinois, all staff members are dedicated to active participation in community organizations and committees relating to his or her practice area.

A. Clay Cox

Clay and his wife Kathleen are the proud parents of two grown sons who are both practicing attorneys at the firm, Christopher and Patrick.  Admitted to the Illinois Bar in 1979, he is the managing partner of the firm and practices primarily in the areas of business organization law (including corporations, partnerships and limited liability companies), estate planning and probate, employee benefits and tax law.  While serving as a bankruptcy trustee, Clay oversaw thousands of bankruptcy cases, both large and small.  After stepping down from his role as a US Bankruptcy Court Trustee after twenty-two years of service, Clay now offers his extensive of knowledge of both sides of the bankruptcy process to families and businesses struggling with financial difficulties.  A resident of Bloomington-Normal for over 30 years, Clay has served the community as President of the McLean County Arts Council, Treasurer of the Bloomington/Normal YMCA, Secretary of the Illinois Prairie Community Foundation, and volunteer for youth sports.

    A. Christopher Cox

    After practicing law in Chicago four years, Christopher returned to his hometown, Bloomington, IL, and joined our firm in December, 2012. Christopher brings considerable litigation experience to Cox & Associates, LLC. Christopher has successfully represented his clients as both a plaintiff and defense attorney. He has received numerous judgments in his clients’ favor at trial, as well as favorable settlements in arbitration, mediation and other forms of alternative dispute resolution.  He will continue to practice in the area of litigation for business and individual clients specializing in general civil litigation, employment law, and bankruptcy law.

    Christopher and his wife Erin are now parents of Connor Luke, born in 2012, and Kellen Clay, born in 2015. He is a fan of college sports, especially his beloved Fighting Illini. He and his wife enjoy traveling, movies and spending time with their families.

    Patrick R. Cox

    Admitted to the Illinois Bar in November 2011, Patrick promptly moved back to Bloomington, IL and joined the firm as an associate.  While working to finish his MBA in Chicago, Patrick began practicing in the areas of real estate law, contract law, tax law, bankruptcy law, estate planning, and business organization.  Patrick takes great pride in helping others navigate their first home purchase, and/or to create their first wills or trusts to provide for their children or start their own business.   While attending Chicago Kent College of Law, Patrick served as an intern in the Kent School of Law Community Tax Clinic and worked with clients to resolve tax disputes. Patrick also clerked for the Honorable Judge Wayne Anderson in United States District Court Northern District of Illinois.
